Joel Allen has more than 30 years of reporting, anchoring and news management experience for television, digital and print media outlets.

An Iowa native, Joel earned his Bachelor's Degree in Communications in 1980 from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Joel spent much of his career working in television newsrooms in Iowa and Indiana. He moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in the summer of 1999, where he managed a start-up news operation at WFXB Fox 43, before joining WPDE ABC15 as a multimedia journalist in May of 2002. He retired from WPDE in 2016.

Joel has won awards for his live spot news coverage and consumer advocacy reporting, along with earning plaudits from various service organizations and advocacy groups, including Rolling Thunder and the Waccamaw Indian people. In recognition of his commitment to historic preservation in the Myrtle Beach area, Joel was the recipient of a media award from the Horry County Board of Architectural Review and Historic Preservation in 2008.

For coverage of other matters of historical significance, the South Carolina State Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored Allen with its excellence in media award for 2014.

Joel is the author of the novel Ripoff and Run, based on actual events he covered as a reporter in Eastern Iowa in the 1980s. Now in retirement, Joel has kept busy doing freelance reporting, and voicing narration for more than two dozen audiobooks. As a charter member of the Coastal Independent Films group, Joel has also been involved in the creation of several short films, including Mr. Myrtle Beach, a documentary he wrote, produced, voiced and edited.

Joel and his wife, Deanna, enjoy traveling to new places in their motorhome and volunteering for community activities.
